While their parents are away, children tend to count down the days and hours until their return. The WestJet FlightLight is a night light toy that helps them do that by keeping them connected in real-time. The idea builds on the magic of seeing a plane flying across the sky and uses live flight data to track travelling parents as they journey home to their children.

The base, designed to resemble aircraft wings, glows peacefully next to the child while they sleep, projecting a starry sky onto the child’s bedroom ceiling. A removable torch, designed to look like the fuselage of the plane, enables active play by projecting the outline of a plane onto a series of playful scenarios. Through a mobile app, parents can send messages directly to the light, to be projected onto their child’s ceiling at the push of a button. Technology that works like magic.

A toy, lamp and connected projector with so many different layers of interaction requires a simple and tactful execution. Between the abstract and the concrete, the item speaks the design language of a wooden toy. The use of gender-neutral colours and a soft shape conveys the subtly poetic character of the concept while giving the product an appearance suitable for all audiences: boys and girls alike.
